GENTLE CARE FOR THOSE WHO CAN'T CONCENTRATE
When people get very old their concentration goes.

So much so that they have trouble even keeping their mind on eating. The people running the 340 Pioneer Manor in Sudbury recognized this problem and did something about it. They introduced the Gentle Care program, developed by a B.C. Firm in the 35-bed special care unit for cognitively impaired residents, named Heritage Lane.

Administrator Catherine Sandblom, Gentle Care co-ordinator Ilona Turczyn, dietary services manager Marianne Matichuk and Pioneer staff worked with Food Systems Consulting Inc. of Toronto and Hospital Food Services Inc. of Ottawa to develop a new feeding system for Heritage Lane residents.

Instead of making them sit down for full three-course meals, the Gentle Care system has the residents taking a series of small meals and nourishments throughout the day.

These items are heated in a Celco high powered combi convection microwave oven by Amana, designed to retherm foods quickly in small batches.
